FUNNY HOW THINGS WORK OUT.

Yep, funny. On New Year’s Day, 2026, you promise yourself a one-way ticket (not sure if you’re allowed) mid-year sometime, to wherever – first stop, your good friend Hakan’s summerhouse in Sweden. There are two good reasons to book ahead – a winter-house, assuming he has one, has you shivering, also, wallet thickness/pocket depth (gotta book early, so they say). A fortnight later, when an email from Hawkeye Publishing pings your iPhone, dreams of bomb cars and buzzing around the continent (and camel-rides around Kufu’s pyramid) disappear along with vague thoughts of voluntary work somewhere (take your pick, the worlds not war-torn, it’s rent!)

So, that’s how it was, back then. The good news (twofold) is my memoir ‘Last Train to Menindee’ finally shunts away from the siding (don’t hold your breath – even though the pace is frenetic inside a publishing house, the wheels seem to turn slowly outside). And… my new boardgame – ‘Campdraft’ is almost at the play test stage (was gonna say ‘don’t laugh’ for that bit of news, but you’re welcome to do so since it’s all about fun and interaction). ‘Play-test stage’ (so I’m learning) is… artwork finished – a shout-out to Leith and Benita Walton’s ‘Nurtured Creations’ – and five boxes ready to ship to professional boardgame geeks for play testing (to brutalise for comment). Shouldn’t say ‘watch this space’, it’s corny, and I’ve said it twice on FB. But, you know, watch this space!

Meanwhile, I’m making new friends in my new life at Greendale (and growing actual fingernails for once – don’t ask, I don’t know why).

Take care, Steve

What are you doing in Greendale? I finally decided to bite the bullet and am recovering from a total right knee replacement. It’s been three weeks and the going in very slow, still need a crutch to get about and pain meds at night so I can sleep. Ask me in six weeks if it was worth it!

I saw your post on FB. It will definitly be worth it.So I’m told. Please tell me it was, when you get there, think I’ve got one looming.
I’m full time casual at Greendale, really happy there. A little lonely at times, and Denise says the same, but time is a great healer. Hope so for your Knee. Best wishes, Steve

Knee is slowly coming good and I am training and competing again with my dogs in trials that don’t require running!

After a lifetime in the bush, Steve Hawe has worn many hats. Lately ringer, horse-breaker, farrier and fencer, and most importantly father of five (forever!), he and his partner now own grazing country west of Longreach, Qld. It was here at ‘Spring Plains’, amidst the splendour of the arid lands that he was inspired to write. To his great delight, he came to realise an authors’ hat can be any and all of the above!

At 15, on the outskirts of Young, central western NSW, a fresh-faced, skinny (hatless!) kid stopped for a moment to listen for the school hooter. It was 9 am first day back in ‘73. On his knees at ‘Wordsworth’s Strawberries’ he breathed a sigh of relief and smiled. In his mind was the classroom clamour of book-bags on mahogany desks, and a vision of the motor bike he was saving for. Brimming with the opti-cence of youth, he was blissfully unaware of the journey enjoined. Or that his stories would one day be spiced and enriched by the laughter and tears, ‘high-fives’ and train-wrecks of five decades of hard slog in the bush. From a passing parade of workmates, bosses, employees, family and friends; he would amass a precious well of snapshots of personas, wisdoms and events.

He would also learn that hats are earned, and should never be thrown away!
